When mediating difficult situations, we help people reach agreement by dealing with interests and issues . . . not personalities. In Wasco County, Oregon, where we helped environmental and private property rights interests find common ground on divisive agricultural land use issues; in The Dalles, Oregon, where citizens and local officials finally agreed on the best use of urban renewal to revitalize their downtown; in central Oregon, where Redmond and Deschutes County differed about their roles and responsibilities; in many contentious situations, we earn the respect of all participants and help them agree on mutually supportable conclusions. We successfully mediated a longstanding conflict between property owners and the Bureau of Land Management in the Nestucca River Basin. This mediation effort was part of a national experiment sponsored by the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and was one of the few cases that was resolved successfully.
