Summary
In 2009 Bob Wise led a team of consultants from Team Oregon, LLC (Cogan Owens Cogan, LLC, SERA Architects, and Century West Engineering), Origin International (Taipei) and the Chinese Culture University College of Environmental Design to develop an EcoCity Vision for Taipei, Taiwan extending to 2050. The vision employs The Natural Step system conditions and Civic Ecology approaches for the visioning process, including backcasting, to develop three interrelated increasingly sustainable visions for the restorative organic city. Building on climate change and sustainability case studies of several outstanding global cities a detailed action plan was developed with indicators for charting progress in the future.
Background
Transformation in any organization is difficult to achieve. How might true and lasting transformation toward sustainability be realized in one of the world’s most densely populated cities? Asia is emerging rapidly economically and strategically. For example, China is forecast to build a new United States in the next 15 years — replicating the total number of square feet of floor space that currently exists in the United States. Cities in China and Taiwan are focusing on new forms of city planning including the concepts of Eco-Cities and Eco-Districts or Eco-Development projects. The state of the art is improving rapidly in China and Taiwan. The Mayor of Taipei, Taiwan wants to lead the region with a great vision for tomorrow that will be an example for all of Asia and commissioned Team Oregon to develop an aggressive vision of the future.
