COC Remembers Mark Hatfield

Arnold Cogan, Senator Mark Hatfield, Elaine Cogan, Representative Elizabeth Furst

In all the remembrances of the late Oregon Senator Mark Hatfield, Elaine and Arnold Cogan, Founding Principals of Cogan Owens Cogan, have one of their own.  They visited with the Senator the evening of an historic occasion: in March 1995, soon after he became the lone Republican to vote against a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution and hence, assured it would not pass.  His fellow Republicans were furious that Senator Hatfield would vote his conscience rather than the party line and there was serious talk of censure or worse.  This photo was taken when Elaine and Arnold were with the Senator and then Oregon Representative Elizabeth Furst as guests at a reception in the Capitol. It was a difficult time for the then Senior Senator.  Luckily, for the state he served so nobly, he survived that crisis well.
